Dry ice cleaning in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors: GMP-compliant, validatable, residue-free

GMP-compliant dry ice cleaning for pharmaceutical and medical technology. Residue-free, validatable, with no chemical contamination. Cleanroom-compatible to ISO 14644.

In detail

Pharmaceutical & medical: dry ice blasting

In pharmaceutical production, cleaning processes are part of product quality. Any residue, whether a chemical trace, a particle or cross-contamination between batches, can render an entire batch unusable and have regulatory consequences.

Dry ice cleaning is the only process that, by definition, leaves no residue. The CO₂ sublimates completely into gas on impact: no moisture, no solvent residue, no particles. This property makes dry ice unique for GMP-regulated environments: the cleaning itself cannot cause contamination.

Since the update of EU GMP Annex 1 (August 2023), manufacturers of sterile medicinal products must demonstrate a Contamination Control Strategy (CCS). Dry ice blasting directly addresses the requirement to remove disinfectant residues effectively, a point at which many conventional processes fail. The process is fully validatable within the IQ/OQ/PQ framework.

Relevant standards
EU GMP Annex 1

Updated August 2023: governs the manufacture of sterile medicinal products. Requires a Contamination Control Strategy (CCS) and the removal of disinfectant residues.

EU GMP Annex 15

Qualification and validation: defines the IQ/OQ/PQ framework for validating cleaning processes. Dry ice blasting is fully validatable.

ISO 14644

Cleanroom classification (Parts 1 to 9): defines particle limits and surface cleanliness. Dry ice can be used in ISO 5 to 8 environments.

ISO 13485

Quality management system for medical devices: governs the manufacture and cleaning of medical devices such as catheters, stents and implants.

ICH Q9

Quality Risk Management: the basis for risk-based cleaning validation. Enables cleaning intervals and methods to be scientifically justified.

Applications

Typical applications:
Pharmaceutical & medical

Dry ice blasting solves industry-specific cleaning tasks where conventional methods reach their limits.

Tablet presses & capsule fillers

Product changeovers in under 30 minutes instead of several hours. Powder residue, binders and traces of active ingredients are removed without residue, demonstrably below PDE limits.

Filling lines & sealing stations

Adhesives, film remnants and product deposits on filling and sealing lines are removed without dismantling. Ideal for batch changeovers in parenteral manufacturing.

Cleanroom surfaces

Walls, floors, ceilings and doors in cleanrooms are freed of disinfectant residue and biofilm, without introducing additional moisture into the controlled environment.

Granulators & coaters

Polymer residue and sugar and wax coatings in coating drums and fluid bed systems are removed efficiently, with no soaking time and no solvents.

Medical device manufacturing

Injection moulds for catheters, stents and implants are cleaned with up to 75% less cleaning time. Silicone residue, burr particles and release agents are removed without residue.

Your benefits

Pharmaceutical & medical: why dry ice?

Pharmaceutical & medical: these industry-specific benefits make dry ice blasting the most efficient cleaning solution.

01

No chemical residues, by definition

CO₂ sublimates completely into gas. There is physically no way for the cleaning medium itself to leave residues. This eliminates the risk of solvent carryover between batches, a critical point in FDA and EMA inspections.

02

Validatable within the IQ/OQ/PQ framework

All blasting parameters (pressure, pellet size, flow rate, distance, angle) are reproducible and documentable. Cleaning can be validated with swab and rinse samples. Acceptance criteria on a PDE basis (EMA guideline since 2015) are met.

03

Faster batch changeovers

Tablet presses can be changed over to a new product in under 30 minutes, instead of 4 to 6 hours with conventional wet cleaning. This means more production capacity and shorter lead times on multi-product lines.

04

Cleanroom-compatible to ISO 14644

Dry ice blasting introduces no particles, no moisture and no chemicals into the cleanroom. With suitable extraction and CO₂ monitoring, the process can be used in ISO Class 5 to 8 cleanrooms.

05

Addresses the EU GMP Annex 1 CCS requirement

The updated Annex 1 (2023) requires a Contamination Control Strategy, including the removal of disinfectant residues. Dry ice removes these residues without leaving new ones itself, a documentable contribution to the CCS.
