Dry ice blasting in die casting: cleaning dies at operating temperature
Gentle cleaning of die-casting dies with dry ice blasting, without cool-down and without die wear. 2 to 3 times longer tool life through regular dry ice cleaning.
Die casting: dry ice blasting
In die casting, tool life is the key cost factor. Release agent residue, outgassing and metal deposits build up on die surfaces over thousands of cycles. They cause quality problems (shrinkage cavities, porosity, surface defects) and shorten the life of expensive tools.
Dry ice blasting solves this problem in a way no other process can: cleaning takes place at operating temperature. Die-casting dies reach surface temperatures of 200 to 500 °C. Conventional cleaning requires hours of cooling, then cleaning, then hours of reheating. Dry ice cleans the hot die in the machine, and the thermal shock effect is actually particularly effective on hot surfaces.
Three cleaning mechanisms work simultaneously: the kinetic impact of the pellets at up to 300 m/s, the thermal shock caused by the temperature difference (−78.5 °C pellets against a die surface at 200 to 500 °C) and sublimation with expansion to 700 times the original volume, which forces loosened residues out of cavities and vents.
Typical applications:
Die casting
Dry ice blasting solves industry-specific cleaning tasks where conventional methods reach their limits.
Die-casting dies (hot & cold chamber)
Release agent build-up, outgassing residues and soldering are removed directly at operating temperature. No cool-down, no reheating: the die goes straight back into production.
Vents & vacuum channels
Blocked vents and vacuum bores are the most common cause of porosity defects. Dry ice cleans these fine channels through the sublimation effect, from the inside out.
Ejector pins & slides
Release agent residue and metal deposits on ejector pins and slides are removed before they cause stiff movement, flash or tool damage.
Temperature control channels & cooling bores
Scale deposits and corrosion in temperature control channels are loosened and dissolved: heat dissipation improves and cycle time falls.
Raw castings (deburring)
Burrs and excess material on raw die castings are removed by dry ice blasting, which is gentler than mechanical deburring, especially for aluminium and zinc die casting.
Die casting: why dry ice?
Die casting: these industry-specific benefits make dry ice blasting the most efficient cleaning solution.
Cleaning at operating temperature
No cooling down, no reheating. For dies with an operating temperature of 200 to 500 °C, this saves 4 to 8 hours of heating and cooling time per cleaning cycle. The thermal shock effect is even stronger on hot surfaces.
2 to 3 times longer tool life
Regular dry ice cleaning removes release agent build-up and outgassing residues before they attack the die surface. Documented practical figures: aluminium die-casting dies reach 150,000 to 200,000 shots instead of 80,000 shots without intermediate cleaning.
Scrap rate reduced by 50 to 70%
Clean vents and even release agent distribution measurably reduce porosity defects, shrinkage cavities and surface defects. In the automotive supply sector, quality requirements are correspondingly high.
No die wear
Dry ice is non-abrasive (Mohs hardness 2). Polished die surfaces, parting surfaces and gating geometries remain undamaged: no material removal, no micro-scratches, no dimensional changes.
ROI in 3 to 12 months
Thanks to reduced downtime, longer tool life and lower scrap rates, dry ice cleaning in die casting typically pays for itself within 3 to 12 months. Annual savings of over €50,000 have been documented.

Die casting: FAQ on dry ice cleaning
Die casting: answers to the most frequently asked questions about dry ice cleaning.
Can’t find your question?0800 0010982 · Mon to Fri, 7:00 to 18:00Yes, and that is the key advantage. Dry ice cleans dies at an operating temperature of 200 to 500 °C directly in the machine. No cool-down, no removal, no reheating. Production is back up and running in minutes rather than hours.
Yes, significantly. Regular cleaning removes release agent build-up and outgassing residues before they attack the die surface. Practical figures show tool life doubling or even tripling: in aluminium die casting, from around 80,000 shots to 150,000 to 200,000 shots.
Release agent build-up (the most common cause of quality problems), outgassing residues in vents, soldering (aluminium build-up), fretting corrosion at parting lines and early-stage corrosion in temperature control channels.
Typically within 3 to 12 months. The savings come from three areas: reduced downtime (no cool-down), longer tool life (2 to 3 times) and a lower scrap rate (50 to 70% less). Annual savings of over €50,000 have been documented.
No. Dry ice has a Mohs hardness of 2, softer than any tool metal. Polished die surfaces, parting surfaces and gating geometries remain undamaged. No material removal, no micro-scratches, no dimensional changes.
